A complete RBI Grade B 2027 strategy covering the Phase I and Phase II pattern, the signature Economic & Social Issues and Finance & Management papers, descriptive-writing tips, a phase-wise study plan, and mock-test strategy.

Preparing for RBI Grade B 2027 means clearing a fast qualifying Phase I, mastering two specialist subjects that no other banking exam tests at this depth, Economic & Social Issues and Finance & Management, and writing crisp descriptive answers under time pressure. The Reserve Bank of India recruits Officers in Grade B (DR) - General through its recruitment portal, opportunities.rbi.org.in. The 2026 cycle has already run, so the product and this guide target the 2027 cycle, with the notification expected around April 2027 and Phase I tentatively in June 2027. A candidate who starts early, respects the difference between the objective Phase I and the merit-deciding Phase II, and drills the ESI and F&M papers holds a clear edge over lakhs of graduates chasing one of the most prestigious officer posts in the country.
Knowing the timeline keeps your preparation peaking at the right moment. The 2027 notification is not yet out, so treat these as tentative and confirm on opportunities.rbi.org.in:
| Event | Date (expected) |
|---|---|
| Notification released | April 2027 |
| Online registration window | April to May 2027 |
| Phase I Preliminary exam | June 2027 |
| Phase II Main exam | July 2027 |
| Interview | August to September 2027 |
The gap between Phase I and Phase II is short, so your specialist subjects must be well underway before Prelims, not started after it. Treat every tentative date as a signal to peak on time, not a fixed guarantee.
To see how tight that calendar really is, look at how the 2026 cycle actually ran. Phase I was held on 13 and 14 June 2026 and Phase II on 25 and 26 July 2026, and the Phase II result was declared on 22 August 2026 against 60 vacancies. Shortlisted candidates then had to submit biodata and documents by 2 September for the General stream, 4 September for DEPR and 10 September for DSIM, with interviews running through September 2026. Our April 2027 expectation rests on exactly that rhythm: the 2026 notification was issued on 29 April 2026, and RBI has kept to a spring release in recent years. Treat it as a planning anchor and an expectation, not an announcement, and confirm the real date on opportunities.rbi.org.in.
Selection runs through three stages:
Final merit is decided by Phase II (300 marks) plus the Interview (75 marks), for a total of 375 marks. Phase I is a gate you must clear, but it does not add to your rank, so the real battle is Phase II. If the prestige of the post is what drew you in, our guide to the RBI Grade B salary and job profile breaks down the pay, perks and career path an Officer in Grade B can expect.
Phase I is a 200-question online objective test carrying 200 marks, to be solved in 120 minutes, with sectional timing and negative marking of 0.25 mark per wrong answer. General Awareness is the biggest section at 80 questions and is RBI-flavoured, so it decides most Phase I scores.
| Section | Questions | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reasoning Ability | 60 | 60 | 45 min |
| General Awareness | 80 | 80 | 25 min |
| English Language | 30 | 30 | 25 min |
| Quantitative Aptitude | 30 | 30 | 25 min |
| Total | 200 | 200 | 120 min |
Both sectional cutoffs and an overall cutoff apply, so you cannot ignore a weak section. Because negative marking is 0.25, avoid blind guessing and attempt only what you can reason out.
Phase II has three papers carrying 300 marks in total. This is the merit stage, and it is where ESI and Finance & Management make or break your rank.
| Paper | Subject | Marks | Time | Composition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| I | Economic & Social Issues | 100 | 120 min | 30 objective (50 marks) + descriptive (50 marks) |
| II | English (Writing Skills) | 100 | 90 min | Fully descriptive (essay, precis, comprehension) |
| III | Finance & Management | 100 | 120 min | 30 objective (50 marks) + descriptive (50 marks) |
The objective halves of ESI and F&M carry 0.25 negative marking. Paper II is fully descriptive. The descriptive answers are typed on-screen, so practising structured, time-bound writing is as important as knowing the content. For a topic-by-topic map of every section above, see our detailed RBI Grade B syllabus and exam pattern guide before you build your study plan.
The core requirements for the General post are:
Because the exact age window, percentage and attempt limits can change per cycle, always cross-check eligibility in the official 2027 notification before applying.
At 80 questions, this is the largest and most decisive Phase I section. It is RBI-flavoured, so it leans heavily on economy, banking awareness, RBI and monetary policy, financial awareness, government schemes and current affairs of the last six to twelve months, plus some static GK. Read a daily current-affairs digest, track RBI circulars, monetary policy decisions and the Union Budget, and revise monthly capsules. The effort you put here also feeds directly into the ESI and F&M papers of Phase II.
Reasoning is the highest-weight Phase I section at 60 questions with a generous 45 minutes. Prioritise puzzles and seating arrangement, syllogism, inequalities, blood relations, coding-decoding, direction sense and data sufficiency. Secure the quick scorers like alphanumeric series and order-ranking first, then invest time in one or two heavy puzzle sets.
With only 30 questions in 25 minutes, speed matters. Cover simplification and approximation, number series, quadratic equations, and word problems on percentage, ratio, average, profit and loss, interest, time and work and speed, plus data interpretation. Build calculation speed with tables, squares, cubes and percentage-to-fraction conversions.
English in Phase I is a 30-question objective section, but Phase II Paper II is a full descriptive Writing Skills paper. So build both: practise reading comprehension, cloze test, para jumbles, error spotting and sentence improvement for the objective section, and practise essays, precis and comprehension answers for the descriptive paper.
ESI is one of two specialist subjects that decide your rank, and neither is covered by a generic banking bank. Cover growth and development (national income, sustainable development, poverty, inequality, unemployment), the structure of the Indian economy (planning, NITI Aayog, budget, fiscal policy, taxation, subsidies), money, banking and monetary policy, social issues (education, health, demographics, urbanisation, social justice, gender), globalisation and international economic organisations (WTO, IMF, World Bank, trade, FDI), and the 1991 economic reforms. Build a running notes sheet of concepts and data points, and practise writing structured 150 to 250 word answers, because the descriptive half is where marks separate candidates.
Finance & Management is the other specialist paper. On the finance side cover the financial system and regulators (RBI, banks, NBFCs, SEBI, IRDAI, PFRDA), financial markets and instruments (money market, capital market, derivatives, forex), and banking and financial reforms (Basel norms, risk management, NPA, financial inclusion, digital payments). On the management side cover management functions and the evolution of thought, motivation and leadership theories, communication, corporate governance, ethics and human resource development. Link current banking-sector news to these concepts so both the objective and descriptive halves feel familiar.
Divide your preparation into three focused phases:
With sectional timing and 0.25 negative marking in Phase I, and objective plus descriptive halves in Phase II, a smart attempt strategy matters as much as knowledge. Full-length mock tests train you to pick the right questions, manage sectional timers, and avoid costly guesses. Practising RBI Grade B mock tests on Quiz4Exam with a realistic CBT interface, exact sectional timing, detailed analysis and an all-India rank helps you convert preparation into a confident, high-scoring performance on exam day.

RBI Grade B (General) is a graduate-level exam, so you need a Bachelor degree with a minimum of 60 percent marks (50 percent for SC, ST and PwBD) or an equivalent grade from a recognised university. The age limit is broadly 21 to 30 years as on the cut-off date, with age relaxation for reserved categories, and a limit on the number of attempts applies for the General category. Always confirm the exact eligibility in the official 2027 notification on opportunities.rbi.org.in before applying.
The 2026 cycle has already run, so the product targets the 2027 cycle. The RBI Grade B 2027 notification is expected around April 2027, with online registration in April to May 2027. Phase I is tentatively in June 2027, Phase II in July 2027, and the Interview around August to September 2027. These dates are tentative until the official advertisement is published, so confirm them on opportunities.rbi.org.in.
Phase I is a qualifying online objective test of 200 questions for 200 marks in 120 minutes with sectional timing and 0.25 negative marking (Reasoning 60, General Awareness 80, English 30, Quantitative Aptitude 30). Phase II counts for merit and has three papers of 100 marks each totalling 300 marks: Paper I Economic & Social Issues, Paper II English Writing Skills (fully descriptive), and Paper III Finance & Management. An interview of 75 marks completes the selection, so final merit is out of 375.
These are the two signature specialist papers in Phase II that decide your rank, and neither is covered by a generic banking bank. Economic & Social Issues covers growth and development, the Indian economy, monetary policy, social issues, globalisation and economic reforms. Finance & Management covers the financial system and regulators, financial markets, banking reforms, and management theory including motivation, leadership and corporate governance. Each has an objective half and a descriptive half, so focused preparation and structured writing here often decide selection.
Yes. Phase I has negative marking of 0.25 mark per wrong answer, so avoid blind guessing and attempt only what you can reason out. In Phase II, the objective halves of the Economic & Social Issues and Finance & Management papers also carry 0.25 negative marking, while Paper II English Writing Skills is fully descriptive with no negative marking. Confirm the exact scheme on the 2027 notification.
