SSC GD vs Maharashtra Police Constable 2027 compared: exam pattern, eligibility and physical standards, salary, postings and career growth, with a clear framework to choose.
Both are respected uniformed constable jobs, but they lead to very different careers: SSC GD Constable is a central paramilitary role with postings anywhere in India (BSF, CRPF, CISF, ITBP, SSB and more), while the Maharashtra Police Constable is a Maharashtra state police job that keeps you within the state. In short, target SSC GD if you are ready to serve across the country and want the widest force choice, and target Maharashtra Police Constable if you want a home-state posting, a Marathi-medium exam and roots in Maharashtra. This guide compares SSC GD vs Maharashtra Police Constable side by side on pattern, eligibility, physical standards, salary, postings and growth, and ends with a decision framework rather than a one-line verdict.
The two written exams look similar on the surface but differ in the number of questions, the medium and, crucially, the order of stages. SSC GD runs a computer-based test (CBE) first and physical tests later; Maharashtra Police runs the physical test first and the written exam later.
| Factor | SSC GD Constable | Maharashtra Police Constable |
|---|---|---|
| Mode | Computer-based (CBE) | Written (OMR-style), Marathi medium |
| Questions | 80 | 100 |
| Total marks | 160 | 100 |
| Duration | 60 minutes | 90 minutes |
| Sections | 4 sections of 20 (2 marks each) | 4 sections of 25 (1 mark each) |
| Negative marking | 0.25 per wrong answer | None |
| Selection order | CBE first, then PET/PST, then medical | PET/PST first, then written, then medical |
SSC GD has four sections of 20 questions each: General Intelligence and Reasoning, General Knowledge and General Awareness, Elementary Mathematics, and English or Hindi. Each question carries 2 marks, there is a negative marking of 0.25 per wrong answer and no sectional lock. Maharashtra Police has four sections of 25 questions each: Arithmetic, Intelligence Test (Reasoning), General Knowledge and Current Affairs, and Marathi Grammar. Every question is worth 1 mark, there is no negative marking, and the qualifying bar is 40 percent, so attempting all 100 questions is the right strategy. A big practical difference: SSC GD decides selection on the CBE, but in Maharashtra Police the physical test comes first as a qualifying stage, and the written paper then builds your merit rank.
Education and age are the first filter. SSC GD is a Class 10 (Matriculation) job open across India, while Maharashtra Police Constable needs a Class 12 (HSC) pass and is a Maharashtra recruitment. Physical standards matter for both because each has a PET and PST stage.
| Standard | SSC GD Constable | Maharashtra Police Constable |
|---|---|---|
| Education | Class 10 (Matriculation) pass | Class 12 (HSC) pass |
| Age | 18 to 23 years (relaxation by category) | As per the unit advertisement (relaxation by category) |
| Height (male) | Minimum 170 cm | As per category in the unit notification |
| Chest (male) | 80 to 85 cm (unexpanded to expanded) | Checked in PST by category |
| Height (female) | Minimum 157 cm | As per category in the unit notification |
| Physical test | PET and PST after the CBE | PET (50 marks) and PST before the written exam |
For SSC GD the national standards are fixed: male candidates need a minimum height of 170 cm with a chest of 80 to 85 cm, female candidates need a minimum height of 157 cm, with relaxations for hill, tribal and border-area candidates. For Maharashtra Police the physical standards and marks are set unit-wise, so the exact height and chest are published in each district unit advertisement; the PET carries 50 marks (male: 1600m run for 20 marks, 100m for 15, shot put for 15; female: 800m run for 20 marks, 100m for 15, shot put for 15), and you need at least 50 percent in the PET to be called for the written exam in a 1:10 ratio. Always confirm the exact standards on the official notification before applying.
Both jobs land almost identically at entry level, since both sit on a Rs 21,700 to Rs 69,100 basic-pay scale. The take-home difference is small and driven mainly by allowances and posting city.
| Salary factor | SSC GD Constable | Maharashtra Police Constable |
|---|---|---|
| Pay scale | Pay Level 3 (7th CPC) | Level S-7 (Maharashtra pay matrix) |
| Basic pay | Rs 21,700 | Rs 21,700 |
| Pay range | Rs 21,700 to Rs 69,100 | Rs 21,700 to Rs 69,100 |
| Approximate in-hand | Rs 36,000 to Rs 40,000 | Rs 37,000 to Rs 40,000 |
| City upside | HRA plus ration and force allowances | Mumbai gross roughly Rs 46,000 (27 percent HRA) |
| Next promotion pay | Rises within Level 3, then rank promotions | Head Constable on S-9 (Rs 26,400 to Rs 83,600) |
SSC GD Constable sits in Pay Level 3 of the 7th CPC with a basic pay of Rs 21,700 in a range of Rs 21,700 to Rs 69,100, and an approximate in-hand of Rs 36,000 to Rs 40,000 per month once DA, HRA, ration money and force allowances are added. Maharashtra Police Constable is on level S-7 of the state pay matrix with the same Rs 21,700 to Rs 69,100 scale, and per our calculation at the 60 percent DA effective 1 January 2026 the approximate in-hand is Rs 37,000 to Rs 40,000 per month, with a Mumbai posting grossing roughly Rs 46,000 before deductions thanks to the 27 percent HRA. Both grow with annual increments and promotions; in Maharashtra the next rung, Head Constable, moves you to level S-9 (Rs 26,400 to Rs 83,600).
This is where the two careers truly split. An SSC GD Constable serves in the Central Armed Police Forces and allied organisations (BSF, CISF, CRPF, SSB, ITBP, Assam Rifles, SSF and NCB), which means postings can be anywhere in India, including borders, high-altitude areas, airports, metros and sensitive installations. The role is border security, internal security, counter-insurgency, VIP and installation security, and disaster-relief support, with transfers across states over a career. Promotions run up the force hierarchy from Constable toward Head Constable, ASI and beyond, and pay grows with each step.
A Maharashtra Police Constable serves within Maharashtra, in a city commissionerate, a district unit or an armed unit such as the SRPF. Daily work is frontline state policing: law and order, beat patrolling, station house duties, bandobast for festivals and elections, traffic support, and escort and guard duties. The promotion ladder runs Police Constable to Police Naik to Head Constable, then Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) and Police Sub Inspector (PSI) through departmental promotions, and eligible serving constables can also attempt the PSI limited departmental exam, a fast in-service route to officer rank. So the trade-off is clear: SSC GD offers a national canvas and a wide choice of forces, while Maharashtra Police offers a home-state career close to family with a well-defined state promotion path.

SSC GD is a computer-based test of 80 questions for 160 marks in 60 minutes, with four sections of 20 questions at 2 marks each and a negative marking of 0.25 per wrong answer. Maharashtra Police Constable is a written paper of 100 questions for 100 marks in 90 minutes, with four sections of 25 questions at 1 mark each and no negative marking. Another key difference is order: SSC GD runs the CBE first, while Maharashtra Police runs the physical test first.
Both start on the same Rs 21,700 to Rs 69,100 basic-pay scale, so entry pay is almost identical. SSC GD Constable sits in Pay Level 3 with an approximate in-hand of Rs 36,000 to Rs 40,000 per month. Maharashtra Police Constable is on level S-7 with an approximate in-hand of Rs 37,000 to Rs 40,000 at the 60 percent DA, and a Mumbai posting grosses roughly Rs 46,000 before deductions due to the 27 percent HRA.
SSC GD needs a Class 10 (Matriculation) pass with an age of 18 to 23, and national physical standards of minimum height 170 cm and chest 80 to 85 cm for male candidates and minimum 157 cm for female candidates. Maharashtra Police Constable needs a Class 12 (HSC) pass, and its physical standards and marks are set unit-wise in each district advertisement, with a 50-mark PET taken before the written exam.
