Conducted by Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs), Ministry of Railways
RRB ALP is the Railway Recruitment Board examination for Assistant Loco Pilot posts under the Ministry of Railways, one of the largest recruitment tests in India. Selection is multi-stage. The first stage computer-based test is a screening paper of 75 questions in 60 minutes covering Mathematics, General Intelligence and Reasoning, and General Science, at the Class 10 level, with one-third negative marking; its marks are normalised and used only to shortlist candidates. The second stage computer-based test has a merit-deciding Part A of 100 questions in 90 minutes covering Mathematics, Reasoning and Basic Science and Engineering, and a trade-based qualifying Part B. Assistant Loco Pilot candidates then take a Computer Based Aptitude Test, followed by document verification and a medical examination. This product covers the Stage 1 screening test and the Stage 2 Part A merit paper.
Candidates must be Indian citizens meeting the RRB age criteria (broadly 18 to 33 years with category relaxations) and hold a matriculation or SSLC pass plus an ITI in a notified trade, or a Diploma or Degree in the relevant engineering discipline recognised by NCVT/SCVT/AICTE. Confirm the exact age band, trade list and educational conditions against the live RRB ALP notification (CEN).
Conducted by the RRBs as vacancies arise, roughly every one to two years. The latest cycle CEN 01/2026 was notified on 14 May 2026 with 11,127 vacancies; applications ran 15 May to 14 June 2026 and the CBT-1 exam date is to be announced (expected in the second half of 2026 or early 2027). Treat exact dates as tentative until the official RRB schedule is published.
