Conducted by National Testing Agency (NTA) for the University Grants Commission (UGC)
UGC NET (National Eligibility Test) is conducted by the National Testing Agency for the University Grants Commission to determine eligibility for the post of Assistant Professor and for the award of Junior Research Fellowship in Indian universities and colleges. It is a single computer-based session of three hours with 150 multiple-choice questions for 300 marks: Paper 1 (50 questions) tests teaching and research aptitude and general awareness common to all candidates, and Paper 2 (100 questions) tests the subject chosen by the candidate. Every question carries two marks and there is no negative marking. Candidates in the top percentile qualify for Assistant Professor, and higher scorers also qualify for the Junior Research Fellowship.
A master's degree (or equivalent) with the minimum marks prescribed by UGC (generally 55%, with relaxation for reserved categories) in the relevant subject. Age limit applies for JRF; there is no upper age limit for Assistant Professor eligibility. Confirm exact criteria against the live NTA UGC NET information bulletin.
Conducted twice a year (typically June and December cycles) by NTA. Product targets the next cycle; treat dates as tentative until the official NTA notification.
