Sample ZP Bharti questions with answers

These come from our free ZP Bharti mock tests. Try each one yourself, then open the answer and explanation.

  1. Science

    1. Which of the following events takes place in meiosis but never in mitosis?

    • A. Division of the cytoplasm
    • B. Condensation of chromosomes
    • C. Duplication of DNA
    • D. Formation of spindle fibres
    • E. Crossing over between homologous chromosomes
    Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: Crossing over between homologous chromosomes

Explanation: The key is crossing over between homologous chromosomes. Pairing of homologous chromosomes and exchange of segments between them occurs in prophase of the first meiotic division and is the source of new gene combinations, while spindle formation, cytokinesis and condensation of chromosomes occur in mitosis as well.

  2. Quantitative Aptitude

    2. A cycle bought for Rs 1500 is sold at a loss of 12%. What is the selling price?

    • A. Rs 1380
    • B. Rs 1320
    • C. Rs 1680
    • D. Rs 1340
    • E. Rs 180
    Show answer and explanation

    Correct answer: Rs 1320

    Explanation: Loss = 12% of 1500 = Rs 180, so the selling price = 1500 - 180 = Rs 1320.

  3. General Engineering (Civil)

    3. Fine aggregate is graded into four zones on the basis of its particle size distribution. Regarding these grading zones, which statement is correct?

    • A. Zone I sand is the coarsest and Zone IV sand is the finest
    • B. The zone of a sand is decided by its silt content alone
    • C. All four zones have the same grading but differ in specific gravity
    • D. Zone I sand is the finest and Zone IV sand is the coarsest
    • E. There are four zones because sand is classified by origin, Zone I being river sand and Zone IV being crushed stone sand
    Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: Zone I sand is the coarsest and Zone IV sand is the finest

Explanation: The four grading zones run from Zone I, the coarsest sand, to Zone IV, the finest. The zone is fixed by the percentage passing each standard sieve, not by specific gravity or silt content. Very fine Zone IV sand needs more water and more cement paste for the same workability, so it is used with caution in structural concrete.

  4. General Awareness

    4. Dengue fever spreads through the bite of which mosquito, which usually bites during the daytime?

    • A. Mansonia
    • B. Anopheles
    • C. Armigeres
    • D. Culex
    • E. Aedes aegypti
    Show answer and explanation

    Correct answer: Aedes aegypti

Explanation: The correct answer is Aedes aegypti. It breeds in clean water collected in tyres, coolers, pots and drums around houses and bites mostly in daylight, so dry day and container emptying drives are used against it. Anopheles spreads malaria.

  5. Marathi Language

    5. 'नीलकमल' (नील असे कमल) is an example of which samas?

    • A. कर्मधारय
    • B. द्विगु
    • C. अव्ययीभाव
    • D. बहुव्रीही
    • E. इतरेतर द्वंद्व
    Show answer and explanation

    Correct answer: कर्मधारय

Explanation: Correct answer: कर्मधारय. In 'नीलकमल' the first word is an adjective of the second (नील असे कमल); adjective + noun with the same referent is कर्मधारय.

  6. Agriculture and Rural Development

    6. The black (regur) soil that covers most of Maharashtra has formed mainly by the weathering of which parent rock?

    • A. Granite and gneiss
    • B. Sandstone
    • C. Limestone
    • D. Deccan trap basalt
    • E. Quartzite
    Show answer and explanation

    Correct answer: Deccan trap basalt

Explanation: Black soil is the weathering product of Deccan trap basalt in a dry climate. The same basalt, when leached under the heavy rainfall of the Sahyadris, gives laterite instead.

  7. English Language

    7. In the sentence below, four words are marked (I), (II), (III) and (IV). Exactly one pair of these words must be interchanged to make the sentence meaningful and grammatically correct. Choose the correct pair. The exports (I) of the country rose steadily while its imports (II) fell for the third year in a row (III), a trend that widened the trade deficit (IV) sharply.

    • A. (II) and (III)
    • B. (I) and (II)
    • C. (III) and (IV)
    • D. (I) and (IV)
    • E. (II) and (IV)
    Show answer and explanation

    Correct answer: (I) and (II)

Explanation: Key: (I) and (II). A trade deficit widens when imports rise and exports fall, so the two nouns must be interchanged: The imports of the country rose steadily while its exports fell for the third year in a row, a trend that widened the trade deficit sharply. As printed, the sentence contradicts itself.

  8. Reasoning Ability

    8. Eight persons, Anil, Bhavna, Chetan, Deepa, Eknath, Farida, Ganesh and Harshada, were born on either the 8th or the 19th of four different months of the same year, namely January, March, June and September. Chetan was born on the earliest of these dates. Anil was born on the date immediately after Chetan's date. Exactly two persons were born between Anil and Bhavna. Harshada and Deepa were born in the same month, and Harshada was born before Deepa. Ganesh was born in June. Farida was born on the 8th of a month and only one person was born after Farida. On which date was Deepa born?

    • A. 8 March
    • B. 19 June
    • C. 8 January
    • D. 19 March
    • E. 19 September
    Show answer and explanation

    Correct answer: 19 March

Explanation: January is taken by Chetan and Anil, June by Bhavna and Ganesh, and 8 September by Farida, so Harshada and Deepa must share March with Harshada on the 8th and Deepa on the 19th. Hence Deepa was born on 19 March. Correct answer: 19 March.
