General Engineering in Paper 1 is set as Part A Civil, Part B Electrical or Part C Mechanical, and you attempt only the part matching the discipline you applied for. Paper 2 stays in that same discipline and goes deeper. Both papers are set in English and Hindi.
Treat Paper 1 as a gate to clear comfortably, not a paper to top. Reasoning 50 and General Awareness 50 together are 100 of the 200 marks and both reward drilling, while General Engineering 100 comes straight out of your diploma syllabus. The two papers need two different risk settings. In Paper 1 a wrong answer costs 0.25 against a 1 mark gain, so a 50-50 guess after eliminating two options pays off across a full paper.
In Paper 2 a wrong answer costs 1 mark against a 3 mark gain, so across 4 options a blind guess is worth 0.25 x 3 minus 0.75 x 1, which is exactly 0. That is break even, not a loss: guessing at random adds swing to your score without adding expected marks, so the gain comes from elimination. Rule out one option and the guess is worth about plus 0.33 marks, rule out two and it is worth plus 1. Watch unit conversions and standard constants, where a single slip costs 4 marks of swing.
SSC prepares the merit list on Paper 2 marks alone, then calls shortlisted candidates for Document Verification, where you produce the diploma or degree, the matriculation certificate for date of birth, the category certificate and the post preference form. Document Verification is followed by a medical examination for the department you are allotted, and field postings such as BRO and MES apply their own fitness standards. There is no interview stage in SSC JE.
Eight weeks is enough when your diploma fundamentals are intact. Give the technical syllabus about half of your daily hours throughout, because it carries 100 marks in Paper 1 and all 300 marks in Paper 2.
